What is an emergency?

A medical emergency is defined as a serious and unexpected illness or injury requiring immediate action or intervention.

What to expect when you arrive at the emergency centre.

  • 1. Check in

    Upon arrival, you will be asked to provide your personal information in order to generate a file.

  • 2. TRIAGE

    A triage nurse will take you to the triage room where your vital signs will be taken as well as a short history to determine your triage colour.

  • 3. CLINICAL AREA

    You will be brought into the clinical area once a cubicle becomes available.

  • 4. CONSULTATION

    The doctor will perform a detailed history and examination.

  • 5. TREATMENT / INVESTIGATION

    Urgent treatment will be provided by the doctor and nurse. The doctor might request blood tests or imaging.

  • 6. DISPOSITION

    After a diagnosis has been made and treatment has been provided, you will either be discharged or admitted to hospital dependant on your condition.

what is triage?

Triage is the process of sorting patients based on the level of acuity to ensure the most severely injured and ill patients receive timely care before their condition worsens. This will determine the order and time in which the patients will be seen.

We apply the South African Triage Scale (SATS).

  • Also known as Red. A life threatening condition requiring immediate medical attention.

  • Also known as Orange. A serious medical condition requiring urgent medical attention.

  • Also known as Yellow. Serious but stable conditions requiring urgent attention, after Red and Orange cases.

  • Also known as Green. A condition that does not require urgent or immediate attention and will be attended to as soon as possible.
